#57 Limestone

from $75.50 /ton
Dust present in new material; wet pile before spreading. Not recommended for direct plant contact or areas with acid-sensitive structures. pH 8-9.
What is #57 Limestone?
Clean crushed limestone, roughly 3/4 inch to 1 inch, screened so there are no fines in it.
Number 57 limestone is quarried rock, crushed and then screened to a clean 3/4 to 1 inch particle with the fines taken out. The fracture faces off the crusher are rough, so each stone grabs the ones around it. Contractors have built base and drainage with it for decades, and in New Orleans proper it is the material we deliver more of than anything else.
#57 limestone compacts firmly, drains excellently, costs less than decorative stone, ideal for structural bases and fill layers in Louisiana construction.
Best uses for #57 Limestone, ranked
- French drain and trench drainage
- Pipe bedding in utility trenches
- Equipment and staging pad base
- Parking lot base preparation
When not to use #57 Limestone
Because #57 Limestone stays loose, it is the wrong stone wherever a layer has to pack. Use these instead.
- The packed base under pavers. No fines, so it doesn't lock; paver sand sinks into its gaps. Use Crushed Concrete for the base and Concrete Sand for the bed.
- The only base layer of a new driveway on soft ground. Clean stone stays loose; a dense base packs. Build the base with Crushed Concrete and put #57 Limestone on top.
- The base under a slab or patio. It stays loose and won't pack into a firm base. Use Crushed Concrete as the base.
- Bedding directly under pavers. Pavers bed in sand. Use Concrete Sand for the bed.
- Planting soil, acid-loving plants. Limestone raises pH. Use Premium Garden Soil to plant in, or Hardwood Mulch on top.
- Play areas. Angular stone; no safety rating. We don't sell a rated play surface.

How much #57 Limestone do I need for a French drain?
Measure the trench: length, width and depth. Pick the Trench shape in the calculator on this page and it gives you the amount to order, rounded up.
Does #57 Limestone compact?
Not into a solid layer. It has no fines, so the stones stay loose. That is what keeps water moving through it, and it is why a driveway needs a packed Crushed Concrete base underneath.
Will #57 Limestone drain?
Yes. Clean stone with open space between the pieces lets water run straight through, which is why it goes in French drains, around drain pipe and behind retaining walls.
Can #57 Limestone go under a slab, patio or pavers?
No, it is not a slab, patio or paver base. Crushed Concrete is the base for those, and pavers bed in Concrete Sand on top of it.
What goes under #57 Limestone on a driveway?
A compacted Crushed Concrete base. #57 Limestone is the top layer you drive on, spread after the base is packed.
How is #57 Limestone delivered?
Loose, straight from the dump bed of one of our trucks. A pile at the end of the trench or the driveway saves you carrying stone.
